CHAPTER 10

The Importance of Andrew Gordon

Thrash gave the order to let the guests back in. “Welcome, welcome,” he called out. “Every attraction is free, today only.”

Hunt and Jan followed Thrash as he marched past the burning pile of debris that had once been the Magellan, barely glancing at it, and back to the front hatch, where a short time before they had been handing out boxes of Sugar Slammers. Now, Eunice was just emerging from under the staircase.

“Thanks for the help,” Hunt said.

Thrash ignored him. Instead of answering, he helped Eunice get settled on one of the steps. Her face was blank; she seemed too upset even to cry.

“Mr. Thrash?” Hunt asked again.

“What is it, Mr. Hunt?” Thrash said, though he kept looking at Eunice.

“How much of what you told the police was true?”

Thrash turned suddenly to look at him. “The part about Slippery Sam Pepper was mostly true,” Thrash said. “The part about you gentlemen working for me was mostly not true. But I am very interested in learning more about your weapons.”

“That’s why you lied to the police about us working for you,” Jan said.

“You are sharp,” Thrash remarked appreciatively. “That is also why I am inviting you gentlemen to dinner this evening at my home in Beverly Hills. We’ll have plenty of time to talk. Garley will be there, if that matters.”

Did it matter? If he and Jan managed to get back to their own time, would they find it as they’d left it? Or had Garley already muddied the waters? Had he and Jan done the same without even trying? How changed would their own time be? Could they still stop her if they needed to?

“Fine,” Hunt said. “It will be good to see her again.”

Thrash huddled with his security men one more time, collected Eunice, and with the space helmet under one arm, led the way out to the field where all the automobiles were parked.

“Nobody else entering the contest?” Jan asked.

“I think I already have a winner,” Thrash assured him.

That didn’t seem fair to Hunt, but he wasn’t in charge.

More automobiles arrived all the time. Great crowds of customers poured in at the front gate; word must have spread that all attractions were free that day. Thrash smiled at everybody and welcomed them boisterously until he and the others came to a sleek silver automobile with four doors, and enough room inside for team sports. Thrash invited Hunt and Jan to get into the back. Eunice rode up front holding the space helmet. Thrash started the engine, and as he backed out of his space, twisted a knob. Bouncy music poured from a grille in the control panel.

Hunt felt a little sick, as he had in Al’s automobile—he did not enjoy the ride to Beverly Hills. As time went on, he felt steadier, but he still didn’t think that riding in an automobile would ever be his favorite mode of transportation. And because he was in the back seat and Thrash had turned up the music, conversation was difficult at best.
